Iceland is the second largest island in Europe, total area 103,000 km² (39,768 square miles), situated in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, directly under the polar circle (66° N).

The shortest distance to it’s nearest neighbours is about 280 kilometers to Greenland, 400 km to the Faroe Islands, 800 km to Scotland and 950 km to Norway.
Which means that Iceland is in aprox. 3 hrs. flight distance from central Europe and 5 hrs. from North America.

With a population of only 320,000 people Iceland is the most thinly populated country in Europe.
Over half of the inhabitants live in the capital area of Reykjavik and about 75 % of Iceland´s total area is uninhabited - covered mostley by sand and stone deserts, lava fields and glaciers.
